Panel Regions

There are currently five Joint Regional Planning Panels covering metropolitan and regional areas of NSW. In June 2009 the Minister for Planning announced that a Regional Panel would also be established for the Western Region of the New South Wales. This Regional panel will be established as soon as practicable after 1 July 2009.

The NSW Government carefully reviewed development applications from previous years to assess potential workloads of the Regional Panels and to decide on the location of the regions.

Regional Panels commenced on 1 July 2009 for the Northern, Hunter and Central Coast, Southern, Sydney Metropolitan East and Sydney Metropolitan West regions (aligned with existing Department of Planning boundaries). A Panel in the Western region of NSW commenced on 1 September 2009.

The Regional Panel provisions do not apply in the City of Sydney, where the Central Sydney Planning Committee will continue to function.

The Wagga Wagga local government area has also been excluded from the Southern Region to put in place interim arrangements requested by the City of Wagga Wagga until the work of the existing Planning Assessment Panel for that area is complete. The Wagga Wagga Interim Joint Regional Panel commenced on 1 September 2009.
